Get to Know Our Native Lamprey

You may be familiar with sea lamprey, invasive to the Great Lakes. However, did you know we have native species of lamprey too?
 

Join Shirley Heinze Land Trust to learn about brook lamprey at Meadowbrook Nature Preserve. You’ll gain insight into local efforts to protect and monitor water quality in our region and hike along the streams at Meadowbrook in search of lamprey. We’ll also have fun activities to show the differences between sea vs. brook lamprey, as well as other fun lamprey-themed activities and giveaways!
 

Shirley Heinze Land Trust is working to monitor water quality and preserve local waterways, helping to ensure healthy habitats for animals like native lamprey. Due to their sensitivity to contaminants and sedimentation, lamprey are good indicators of water quality. They are small, slender, snake-like fish whose gray-brown bodies may be easily missed, so take this opportunity to learn about this ancient species of fish and why they’re important to our waterways!
 

• What to Bring: Long pants and sturdy shoes are recommended. We will have a water refill station at this event, so bring a reusable bottle!
• Length: Hikes will be about 1/2 – 1 mile long along various terrain, including gravel and dirt trails with some small inclines.
• Weather Policy: Rain or shine. Event will be cancelled in inclement weather. No rain date.
